7 Morning Habits to Create a Successful Day

It is so important to start your day off right. Have you ever had one of those days where one thing goes wrong early on, and then everything seems to snowball out of control and your day becomes a disaster? We have ALL rolled out of bed on the wrong side once or twice. These 7 steps are designed to help you combat anything negative that the world throws at you by setting you up in a positive, cleansing and calm manner, so your day has the best chance to be successful, intentional and fulfilling.

This list is not exhaustive and is the IDEAL way to begin the day. Life happens and often there is time constraints on our mornings so take the pressure of yourself and do the best you can. Any small positive habit change can have a massive impact on the success of our day.

  1. Thank You For Another Day

The best way to begin any day is to say thank you. As soon as our eyes open, let us begin by expressing gratitude for being alive and healthy another day. Gratitude reduces any toxic emotions and instead creates a sense of fulfilment. Gratitude can help us be more resilient, feel more relaxed and it increases our overall happiness. Beginning the day by creating positive emotion and feeling content, we have started our day off well in the first 60 seconds.

2. Drink Water

Water is life. The average human body is made up of 50-65% water, we lose this throughout the day in many forms and we need to replenish those losses. By beginning the day with a tall glass of water we are going to optimise our health and avoid the side effects of dehydration later in the day. Water gives us energy to get through our day and helps flush toxins out of the body. I personally enjoy a tall glass of lemon water, the added lemon aids the detoxing of our body and skin.

3. Make Your Bed

This is so important. It may seem a small thing, however, making your bed and tidying your sleeping space when you first get up, creates a sense of accomplishment. This small act of creating a clean space is a cleansing mechanism and creates clarity for your mind. The space will instantly look tidier and at the end of the day, you return home to the haven you created in those few minutes in the early hours. As you return to bed at night you revisit that sense of accomplishment from the morning and can then intentionally review what else you have accomplished that day.

4. When in Doubt, Workout

Start the day by getting your heart, pumping the blood through your veins, and into your brain. This helps us to wake up and feel energised. We are also cleansing the body by sweating.  By working out in the morning, you can increase your mental clarity by up to 10 hours throughout the day. Our bodies also continue to burn calories throughout the day. We are also more likely to actually complete our workout if we do it in the morning, when we do not run the risk of being too tired from work. Workouts do not need to be long, 20- 30 minutes is better than nothing and can still release the endorphins that will make you feel great! I enjoy a short morning yoga session, this allows my body to lengthen and become supple after a nights rest. If hitting the gym as the sun rises is a little daunting, create a calm space in your home and spend some time in downward dog to start your day off right.

5. Fuel Your Body

Whatever works for you, drink a smoothie, green juices, eat eggs and grain toast or intermittent fast. Do whatever is working for you in your life currently and is helping you achieve your goals. I personally find eating a breakfast of grains and fruit habitually, gives me my best start to the day. This is not the same for everyone and there is a ton of conflicting information out there. So listen to your body, experiment with what you eat, and when, then review what works and why. Find what gives you energy, clarity and makes you feel satisfied.

6. Cleanse Your Body

We have cleansed our space by making the bed, we will cleanse our mind in the next step, this time is for cleansing the physical body. There are many discussions about whether we should be showering in the morning or evening, however since ideally we are working out in the morning, it is important to wash the sweat off ourselves and feel fresh for our day. Bathe, shave, moisturise and make yourself feel confident and clean for the day ahead. After a long day, it is nice to crawl into a ready made bed with a clean body, so if you are intentionally being planet friendly with your showers, I love one in the morning and one at night.

7. Meditate

The most important part of your morning routine should be to meditate, ideally for 10- 15 minutes, however, very few of us have that sort of time spare and meditating seems to be the most overlooked. This is the time to cleanse your mind and soul, to set a very clear intention of what you want to achieve in the day ahead. It is the time to visualise how you want to look, how you will walk, your manner of speaking, your energy towards others, your smile. Become all those things during the visualisation. Create the calm space within you so that you are ready to take on whatever type of storm the day could bring. Visualise how you would like to react to things that don’t go to plan, and once you have centred yourself, bring energy back to your fingers and toes, open your eyes and begin your most important task of the day.

7 ways to find your Inspiration

Last week I went to the cinema and watched The Greatest Showman, firstly, it is such an incredibe film, if you have not seen it – you must! During the movie I went through such heightened states of emotions; tears, laughter, joy, but mainly I found myself being inspired by what I saw on screen. It got me thinking, how can I take these feelings of inspiration and bottle them to use at a time that I need them? How can I find my inspiration when I don’t want to get off the couch because I’m watching reruns of Friends?

The answer is; recognising what motivates you, what gets your heart pounding and wanting to head to the gym, read that book and generally get stuff done! I believe there are many sorts of inspiration and each of us connects with something different, check out this list and find what works for you, this list is not exhaustive, anything in life could inspire you, make sure you notice what it is. Find the sound, quote or person that gets inside your soul and shouts, “Let’s do this!”

MUSIC

This one is pretty self explanatory, most of us have a playlist that we use at the gym for a workout. Why not take it one step further and create a playlist that you listen to each morning to get you in the mood for your day? There are studies that show our heart rate tends to sync to the tempo of music, keep that in mind when creating your playlist. Anything too fast will increase your heart rate and if you are trying to relax, this isn’t the best choice. Avoid tunes that you assosciate with negative times in your life and most importantly, each time you hear a piece of music that makes your heart sing, place it in a playlist for the times you need inspiration and a smiling soul.

MOVIES/ VIDEOS

As per my initial example of The Greatest Showman, sometimes we watch something that really speaks to us. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a film, if you are searching for inspiration, then Ted Talks may be what you need. Ted Talks are inspirational and educational videos, usually less than 20 minutes each by a massive range of expert speakers on almost any topic that you could think of! You can even make playlists of your most inpiring Talks. Sometimes, a short video we see on social media can motivate us, facebook has an option to save a post so that you can access that video when you need inspiration. It’s time to get watching!

BOOKS

I love reading, almost any genre. However, I love motivational books, I am currently reading Brendon Burchards book, High Performance Habits, and it inspires me in all areas of my life. This is an example of a Personal Development book to inspire you, I often reference inspiring books similar to this one in my blogs so keep an eye out. However, I also become inspired by educational books or biographys that open my eyes and mind to a whole bunch of things that I never knew about, and that feeling inspires me to research those subjects more. What are your favourite books to read that inspire you to make your dreams happen?

PODCASTS

Living in London with no car and taking the tube to work… podcasts are my best friend. I love that you can download them to your phone because I do not have access to wi-fi on the underground! My all time favourite podcast is by Lewis Howes, if you are not already listening to his inspirational podcasts, then subscribe to him on itunes. Every Friday he releases a 5 minute podcast that is specifically created to inspire you. It is quick, easy and does the job. Just like every other option I have listed here, there are podcasts for any topic that you could desire, find what speaks to you and make a habit of listening to it.

NATURE

Nothing soothes a tired soul, like a mindful walk in nature. If you are feeling burnt out, uninspired and a little tired of adulting, then get outside. It may seem like an effort to even get outside, but I promise you that the fresh air, sunshine, and sounds of nature will be the soul food you require. Make a routine of getting outside regularly, it is very easy to fall into the habit of leaving the house, getting in the car, going to work in an office and returning home with little interaction with the outside world. Take a moment to feel the sun on your face, plan a weekend at the beach and feel the sand between your toes. Sometimes, we don’t need any of the distractions listed here to inspire us, maybe we need to return to nature to find the space for inspiration in our mind.

Who doesn’t love a quote? If you are looking for regular inspiring quotes, make sure you follow my instagram page @healthymindhealthybody_life, I post regular quotes that I find inspiring and hopefully they will speak to you also. I’ve scattered a few quotes that really spoke to me throughout this article, I hope you’ve enjoyed them! There are SO many quotes online; google or pinterest search ‘quotes’ and find your favourites, frame them, put them on post it notes, write them in your diary. Surround yourself with positive words that inspire you.

PEOPLE

This one’s my favourite. Who inspires you most in this world? It could be anyone, an entrepeneur, an actor/ actress, a friend, a child or a partner. Now, why do they inspire you? If it is someone you don’t know, maybe you are inspired by work they do and want to replicate it. If the person who inspires you is someone you know, it may not be because they motivate you, perhaps you are inspired to be your best self FOR THEM. Find the person that inspires you to get out of bed each day, remember every morning that they are your source of inspiration and allow that love for them to motivate you to succeed.

Just Begin Again

Some of you may have noticed that I haven’t posted a fresh blog for some time. The final months and weeks of each year tend to cause stress and chaos no matter how organised we are.

I was lucky enough to spend this Christmas with both my, and my partners families. Which for those of you who know me, you realise that was something quite special.

However amongst the busyness and joyous times of the festive period, I let my self care lapse slightly. For me, sharing words of meaning to each of you is part of my self care. And so today, in the first week of January I’d like to chat about the idea of simply, beginning again.

Have you ever pictured the final day of your life, if you knew it was to be your final day? Picture it for a moment now, and I ask you; what changes would you make? Have you any regrets?

More than likely you don’t actually regret anything you have done, achieved or experienced in your life, we rarely do. It is much more common to look back and wish we had done more, we tend to regret the things we didn’t do.
